Alberta Junior Tour hits Wetaskiwin

Alberta Golf (Wetaskiwin) –

By Dunc Mills

The ‘stars’ of the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Golf Tour are usually the junior golfers who excel at Tour events across the province.  They might be well established juniors with extensive resumes or fresh faces winning their very first event. Sometimes, the ‘star’ is a golf course in fantastic condition with volunteers and staff that roll out the red carpet for junior golfers from across the province.

Today, in addition to some outstanding golf, the highlight of the day was without question the post-tournament meal prepared by the Executive Chef and his staff at the Montgomery Glen Golf Club in Wetaskiwin.  Every year, the team at Montgomery Glen seems to out-do themselves in terms of the quality and variety of the tournament banquet they present to the players.

Today, the kids enjoyed barbecued ribs, bacon mac ‘n cheese, a vegetable medley ( you know, those green and orange and red things), seasoned potato wedges, Caesar salad and a dessert tray. What a refreshing and nutritious presentation for the players instead of fried foods and burgers. Our compliments to the chef!
Oh yes, we played golf, too!  Mitch Desjarlais of Broadmoor GC in Sherwood Park continued his fine play on Tour this summer by firing a sparkling 1-under par 71 to pip Rory Wutzke of Camrose by a single shot.  Brolan Badger of the Edmonton CC was solo third on 74, with Forestburg’s Jace Shannon and Mason Kucy of Camrose T4 with matching 75s as nearly a dozen kids broke 80 on the beautifully prepared layout on the north side of Wetaskiwin.  Badger and Kucy were new qualifiers today for the season -ending Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 23.  They will be joined by Wild Card qualifier Noah Hackett of Ponoka (79), Kaedin Wolfe Ponoka (79) from the flight for boys born in 2003/04, and Kohen Yeske of Valley Ridge in Calgary.  Yeske’s 84 earned the available Tour Championship spot for the players on hand born in 2005 and later.
Jayla Kucy (L) of Camrose and Mitch Desjarlais (R) of Broadmoor, champions today at the Montgomery Glen Junior Open.

Three junior girls were on hand today, featuring 2018 Tour Champion Jayla Kucy of Camrose, whose 83 was low gross score today.  Mia De Freitas of Bonnyville made her first Tour appearance of the season this morning, but was forced to withdraw with an injury.  Nicole Rohr of Camrose completed the field, but we had no new Tour Championship qualifiers from the girls’ flight today as both Kucy and Rohr are already in the field.
Tomorrow, the Tour heads a half-hour east of Wetaskiwin down Highway 13 to Camrose for their Junior Open, with a scheduled 9 a.m. shotgun start.  Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow morning, but plans are to play barring lightning or completely unplayable conditions.  Anyone see the forecast for The Open this week?  Tomorrow’s conditions in Camrose pale in comparison to those forecast for Royal Portrush, so let’s play golf!
