Central Alberta swing concludes in Olds

Alberta Golf (Olds) – Dunc Mills

A busy three-events-in-three-days swing through the Calgary area came to a conclusion this afternoon at the Olds Central Highlands GC for the club’s annual Junior Open. We had a couple of dozen young players from Edmonton to Calgary on hand to tour the somewhat soggy, but in great shape, Olds layout. Thankfully, we didn’t get any more rain or lightning during play, and the competitors got their round in without any weather hassles.

Chase Bodoano of Broadmoor GC in Sherwood Park snagged his first Tour win with an excellent round of 1-under 71, the low round on Tour to date this summer. Bodoano’s round featured four consecutive 3’s on his card mid-way through the back 9 to provide the springboard for him to get under par for the day. Joe Kelly of Innisfail was runner-up with a fine score of his own, a 2-over 74. Jace Shannon of Forestburg made his first start of the 2019 Tour schedule and completed the podium with a 75. Kelly and Shannon each competed last week at the Alberta Golf Junior Championshp at Highwood GC in High River, and each finished in the top 50 juniors in the province.

In addition to Jace Shannon, qualifiers today for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 23 included Kyle Racich (83) of Glendale in the flight for boys born in 2000/01/02, Cole Fox (84) from the flight for boys born in 2003/04, and Wild Card qualifiers Brandon Gratton (86) of the Edmonton Petroleum Club and Colby Sims (87) of Pine Hills GC in Rocky Mountain House.

It was deja vu in the Junior Girls division as Brynne Davies of Earl Grey, Morgan McInnis of Olds and Nicole Rohr of Camrose duplicated their 1-2-3 finish from yesterday in Carstairs. As both Davies and McInnis had previously qualified for Wolf Creek, 11-year-old Rohr earned her first-ever spot in the season-ending event. Davies continued her fine play on Tour this summer with an 81 to capture her third tournament of the year.

The Tour makes its first starts of the year north of Red Deer next week with another three-tournaments-in-three-days schedule. Whitetail Crossing GC in Mundare plays host on Tuesday, July 16, followed on Wednesday, July 17 at Montgomery Glen GC in Westaskiwin, and concluding a week from tomorrow on Thursday, July 18 in Camrose. Entries are open for all three events, so please enter early to help our host sites plan more effectively for their tournaments.

The Top Six and Ties in each age group earn Titleist Order of Merit ranking points.
