Mother Nature cancels Carstairs Junior Open

Written by Duncan Mills

When in doubt, bet on Mother Nature!

What a downer Tuesday afternoon for 67 junior golfers from as far away as Edmonton and Lethbridge who had shown up in Carstairs for the stop on the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour.  We had a wealth of young players on hand today eager to test their games over the tree-lined fairways in Carstairs, but threatening skies all afternoon eventually opened up about 5 p.m. just as the first group of young players had completed their round.  The temperature dropped about 10 degrees in about 10 minutes and I almost expected it would start snowing!  We could see that the skies were going to drench everyone and with sightings of funnel clouds in the vicinity, it was an easy decision to hustle these kids to safety.

The food and beverage staff went to work to get all the suppers ready for the players on short notice, and we paid out the prize money with a random draw within each flight.  There really wasn’t much else we could do to give the players their best opportunity to compete and maintain player safety as well.  Thanks very much to Head Professional Kirk Williscroft and his entire team in Carstairs who went overboard to help provide a terrific competitive opportunity for these youngsters.

The Tour is off now until Monday, July 13 in Lacombe and Wednesday, July 15 in Olds. Three events in the Edmonton area are coming up the following week at RedTail Landing at Nisku, Whitetail Crossing in Mundare and in Camrose.  Entries are still open at this time for all these events, although the Lacombe and Olds tournaments are nearly sold out.  Enter as soon as possible to avoid the disappointment of not securing your spot in these upcoming McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour events.
