The largest field of the 2019 season was on hand today at the Edmonton Petroleum G&CC as 60 juniors from across northern Alberta were treated to a terrific junior golf tournament. The “Pete Club” was in sparkling condition and the weatherman certainly cooperated, providing clear skies and just a hint of wind. Today’s entrants contained a mix of Tour regulars and a nice group of players new to the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour.

60 players participated in the Edmonton Petroleum Club’s Junior Open!

We had a good field of seven junior girls on hand this morning, headlined by Brooke Brezovski of St. Albert, now playing out of Glendale. Brooke has had a very busy summer, finishing 12th at the Sun Life Financial Alberta Ladies Amateur at The Ranch in Edmonton and 10th at the Alberta Junior Girls Championship in High River. Brooke also competed in the Golf Canada Canadian Ladies Championship in Red Deer. It is pleasing to see a young lady who got her start in competitive golf on the McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour doing well going head to head with the best female golfers in the country. Brooke didn’t disappoint today, as she fired a steady 79 to win the junior girls’ division comfortably. I’m sure the younger girls who were paired with Brooke enjoyed her company and to see where their games stood in comparison. Brooke earned the spot available from the girls’ division for the Tour Championship, where she would certainly be among the favourites.

In the junior boys’ division, Devin Kucy of Camrose toured the pristine fairways and slick greens in 75 strokes, a single shot clear of Glendale’s Ethan Couch and the host club’s Brady O’Grady. This was Kucy’s second Tour win this summer, coming on the heels of his title a month ago in Carstairs. Blake Reimer of Windermere and Scott Levey of Belvedere were another shot back in fourth with 77s. New qualifiers for the Tour Championship today included O’Grady from the flight for boys born in 2003-04, Eric Kortbeek (78) of Windermere from the flight for boys born in 2000-02, and Levey from the flight for boys born in 2005 and later.

Wild Card qualifiers included Josh Salcedo of Jagare Ridge and Lucas Sadownyk of Sturgeon Valley from the older boys, along with Junshi Hideshima of Blackhawk and Connor Shaigec of the Edmonton CC from the flight for the younger boys.

Tomorrow morning, the Tour heads west on the Yellowhead to the spectacular Trestle Creek Golf and RV Resort, site of the 2019 Alberta Open Championship presented by SVR Lawyers, held earlier this summer, which was won by Andrew Harrison of Camrose, who cut his competitive golf teeth on the Tour.

Three events in the Edmonton area highlight next week’s schedule. We are in Stony Plain on Monday, August 12th, Barrhead on Wednesday, August 14th and the always challenging Black Bull GR layout at Ma-Me-O Beach on Thursday, August 15th.
